What is the future of renting in London? With home ownership looking increasingly unachievable in the capital, a panel of experts gather to discuss how brands and thought leaders must adapt to cater to the modern world

The current economic climate, stagnant wages and soaring house prices mean it’s harder to own than ever to get on the property ladder in London. As a result, the high demand for rental properties in the capital mean that generation rent has to put up with sub-standard living conditions.
Brands and thought leaders need to respond and adapt to the changing needs of how people are living and cater to the modern world, to help form a progressive, alternative life at home for renters.
So how are designers responding to the new renting market? This will be the topic of hot debate at the collaborative ‘Future of Renting’ panel event, brought to you by IKEA and The Design Museum, on Wednesday 16 January 2019.
‘Recent reports show that London will become a city of renters by 2025’
The speakers – Jamiee Williams of SPACE10 (Project Lead on One Shared House 2030, researching how we will live in the year 2030), Maria Jonsson of IKEA (an expert in IKEA’s annual Life at Home Report) and Nick Lobo Brennan of Apparata (an architect working with Grayson Perry on affordable housing with integrated studios in London) – will reflect on how the home is being affected by fundamental shifts in the renting market and why product design needs to work harder than ever in rental accommodation to adhere to flexible/fluid living situations.
