The Atheneaum

1 Best for… Location
The Athenaeum is surely situated in one of the best locations in London, sitting directly opposite Green Park and right on the edge of Mayfair. This family owned, 5-star hotel features bedrooms, suites and also apartments, which are perfect for longer stays with a family. The hotel itself is stylish and friendly, with a stunning lounge area and cosy dining room, where food is first-rate and the atmosphere sultry. The discreet bar is another highlight, with whisky being a speciality – there are 364 to choose from. A perfect excuse to visit nearly every day of the year perhaps? If that seems a bit extreme, book a night or two in a suite to make the most of the Athenaeum’s fantastic views over the park. Fun London-themed interior touches make this the perfect stay for true lovers of the city.

The Dorsett

2 Best for… A girly weekend
Shepherd’s Bush may not immediately spring to mind as the ideal location for a weekend of fun, but with the arrival of the new swanky Dorsett hotel, W12 could be the destination you never knew you were looking for. Chinese hotel group Dorsett have taken over the Grade II-Listed Pavilion that overlooks Shepherd’s Bush Green and transformed it into a 317-room hotel. Plan a weekend of fun with a spot of serious shopping at Westfield (5 minutes’ walk away), before returning for some R&R in the hotel’s beautiful spa. Pre-dinner cocktails in the stunning bar area followed by an East-meets-West dinner in the chic restaurant should provide the perfect prep for exploring one of the many near-by bars, before falling into one of the comfiest beds in town.

The Goring

3 Best for… Traditional luxury
Located in Belgravia, The Goring is the only five-star luxury hotel in London that is owned and run by the family that built it. Last year, it was granted a Royal Warrant of appointment to HM The Queen for Hospitality Services and yes, it was here where the Middletons stayed the night before the wedding of the decade… As you’d imagine, The Goring is the epitome of luxury and elegance, with first-rate dining (newly appointed chef Shay Cooper joins with a wealth of experience from The Bingham in Richmond, where he gained his Michelin star) and the option of booking the glorious ‘Royal Suite’ if you fancy channelling your inner princess (and let’s face it, who wouldn’t?).

The Savoy

4 Best for… Glitz and glamour
The Savoy’s reputation speaks for itself, and those in search of a slice of seriously suave Art Deco glamour, impeccable service and an experience that sets itself apart from many other hotel stays should book in. Aside from all the expected qualities, however, there’s plenty going on at this London institution to keep it up-to-date and attracting new guests all the time – how about trying out the new ‘Press for DP’ in-room champagne-on-call button, just to push the limits of luxury?

Andaz Liverpool Street

5 Best for… Art lovers
Five star luxury boutique hotel Andaz Liverpool Street is housed in a beautiful red brick Victorian building dating back to 1884, and as well as boasting tons of architectural style, they’ve just launched ‘Room With A View’ – a series of East London street art rooms. Four British artists have hand-painted four of the hotel’s luxurious Large King guest rooms, to depict their interpretation of East London’s past, present or future. A double dose of luxury and culture for those with an eye for style.

Ace Hotel

6 Best for… Trendsetters
Located in the heart of Shoreditch, the Ace Hotel is achingly cool, but still incredibly welcoming. Rooms are designed to give the feel of staying at a friend’s apartment, and feature quirky, homely touches, whilst the reception area has an air of sixties chic, and houses a photobooth so you can capture the magic. Hoi Polloi is the hotel’s Modern British restaurant, and is as much a place to be seen as it is to eat, drink and be merry.

Rosewood London

7 Best for… Feeling like a film star
Rosewood London on High Holborn is a very special place. The grand building that houses it is centred around a courtyard teeming with mind-blowing cars and beautiful people, whilst you enter the super-sleek reception to a soundtrack provided by the resident tweeting birds. In warmer months, you can sit outside the hotel’s Holborn Dining Room restaurant people-watching, or when the sun goes down, retire to the ultra-stylish Scarfes Bar, named after the famous caricaturist and just as fabulous.

Tucked away within the heart of St James, Dukes hotel is discreet and elegant, with an array of first-rate rooms and suites and a bar that boasts some pretty impressive literary history – it was in fact here where James Bond creator Ian Fleming dreamt up the line “shaken, not stirred” No prizes for guessing what’s recommended from the cocktail list then…

The Ham Yard Hotel

9 Best for… Being seen
Arguably THE London hotel opening of 2014, the Ham Yard Hotel in Soho is the latest member of the Firmdale family, the company responsible for much-loved locations such as The Soho Hotel. As you’d expect from a chain of such calibre, this hip destination is stylish, sophisticated and effortlessly cool. If the destination bar and restaurant aren’t enough to keep you occupied, there’s a theatre and even a bowling alley too. No expense has been spared in making the Ham Yard the place to be.

The view from The Bingham

10 Best for… A feel of the country in the city
The Bingham in Richmond offers a slice of tranquillity within reasonable distance to the centre of town. Located right next to the Thames in a beautiful Georgian townhouse, this charming boutique hotel is small but perfectly formed – the cocktail bar is contemporary and sleek, whilst the restaurant serves some of the best food for miles around. During the summer, the gardens are the perfect place to soak up some sun and unwind.
